Los primeros relatos de viajes celebraban un paisaje y un patrimonio \u00fanicos que hab\u00edan engendrado una raza indomable, y esta noci\u00f3n rom\u00e1ntica de una naci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica, ling\u00fc\u00edstica y culturalmente aislada en la Europa continental, con provincias que se extend\u00edan a ambos lados de los Pirineos, tambi\u00e9n encantar\u00eda a escritores y cineastas extranjeros como Orson Welles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, tras la Guerra Civil espa\u00f1ola (1936-39), la hagiograf\u00eda se vio contrarrestada por las pol\u00edticas y t\u00e1cticas opresivas de la dictadura franquista (1939-75), que prohibi\u00f3 el derecho de reuni\u00f3n y el uso del euskera, y empuj\u00f3 a los disidentes a los cineclubs privados que eran una tapadera para el debate pol\u00edtico. En consecuencia, la uni\u00f3n del pensamiento y la acci\u00f3n pol\u00edticos con la teor\u00eda y la pr\u00e1ctica cinematogr\u00e1ficas propag\u00f3 una fe contundente en el cine documental como instrumento de registro y propaganda.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 56.25% 0px 0px; position: relative; text-align: center;\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/86379258?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage-->Mientras tanto, las delicias distintivas de la hospitalidad vasca llevaron a la creaci\u00f3n del Festival de Cine de San Sebasti\u00e1n en 1953, al que siguieron varios festivales de cortometrajes y documentales. Los documentalistas vascos trataron de expresar el contraste y la discordia que defin\u00edan su relaci\u00f3n con la centralizada industria cinematogr\u00e1fica franquista y, aunque privados del euskera, su yuxtaposici\u00f3n de sonidos e im\u00e1genes cre\u00f3 un lenguaje de conflicto equivalente que culmin\u00f3 en la introspectiva Ama Lur (1968). Realizada el mismo a\u00f1o en que se produjo la escalada de violencia que ha ensombrecido el desarrollo del Pa\u00eds Vasco moderno, Ama Lur inspir\u00f3 a muchos, tanto pol\u00edtica como art\u00edsticamente, hasta el punto de que, tras el final de la dictadura, el primer gobierno aut\u00f3nomo vasco dedic\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente el 5% de todo su presupuesto a la tarea de construir la naci\u00f3n mediante la reactivaci\u00f3n de la industria cinematogr\u00e1fica aut\u00f3ctona.<\/p>\n<p>Siguieron muchas epopeyas de \u00e9poca, realizadas por cineastas que aprovecharon las generosas subvenciones, y surgieron nuevas productoras. La serie de documentales Ikuska, realizada por Bertan Filmeak, sirvi\u00f3 de aprendizaje a figuras como Imanol Uribe, cuya progresi\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s del documental, la recreaci\u00f3n y la ficci\u00f3n domin\u00f3, influy\u00f3 -y podr\u00eda decirse que sesg\u00f3 demasiado hacia el terrorismo- la representaci\u00f3n cinematogr\u00e1fica del Pa\u00eds Vasco.
