SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | The txoko experience
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE:\nThe BEO is hosting its first “Pintxos and Pics” event showing this film. Space is limited and while the event is free\, reservations are necessary. If you cannot come and have already RSVP’d\, please email info@basqueeducational.org and let us know. Thank you for your cooperation.  \nThe BEO will be following CDC guidelines for COVID-19. \nSYNOPSIS:\nA documentary focused on the unique spaces of txokos\, or gastronomic societies\, where artisanal cuisine is the main protagonist. Basque people enjoy the entire process of selecting local products at open air markets\, cooking together\, and\, finally\, eating and celebrating communally around the table. In txokos\, all of these processes come to life. The documentary will include the voices of a selection of renowned Basque chefs in their own restaurant kitchens\, and will highlight products like Rioja wine\, Idiazabal cheese\, and gourmet pastries\, to name a few. By emphasizing the products and the chefs who work with them\, the film will underline the value\, essence\, and environment in which delicious meals are created. \n2018\, directed by Yuri Morejon\, color\, in English\, Euskara & Castilian with English subtitles\, 54 minutes \n\n\n\nClick here to watch the trailer

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | Dardara
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE:\nThe BEO will be following CDC guidelines for COVID-19. \nSYNOPSIS:\nAfter 25 years of non-stop creation and at the peak of their career\, the rock band Berri Txarrak decided to hang up their instruments. But before they did that\, and as a farewell\, they did one last tour around the world to thank all those fans who had bopped to their music all those years. Filmmaker Marina Lameiro went with them with the intention of recording the occasion\, constructing a choral portrait from diverse stories that range from Spain to Mexico\, Germany\, Japan\, the United States\, etc.\, all marked by a common passion: the music of Berri Txarrak. \nWe see what their songs have left behind in a story that follows the final steps of a group capable of transcending a style\, a language\, and several generations to become a universal phenomenon. \nDardara (Trembling) is a documentary that progresses through the lyrics and reflections of Gorka Urbizu\, author of the group’s songs for a quarter of a century and who now faces the vertigo of a creative future that is yet to be written. A film about the power of music and passion – the “minimum requirement\,” as one of their lyrics says. Passion is what has guided them from their beginnings to this last tour and what has allowed them to become an important part of the life ofthousands of people. \n\n\n\nClick here to learn more about the film

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | Gure Oroitzapenak
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE:\nThe BEO will be following CDC guidelines for COVID-19. \nSYNOPSIS:\nGure Oroitzapenak is a string of short films that brings to life the poems\, short stories and essays of renowned Basque writer Joseba Sarrionandia. His various writings\, now in film\, reflect the different aspects of his life that paint a picture of suffering\, love and endurance. \nThe countenance of Joseba Sarrionandia is multi-faceted\, not only for having dabbled in all literary forms of expression\, but for having been capable of creating his own imagery\, composed of endless worlds. Thus\, several of the elements appearing in the literary world will undoubtedly appear here: the sea\, the port\, childhood\, trains\, uprooting\, war\, destruction\, love\, drifting\, pain\, fantasy\, mystery\, initiation\, torture… \nPRESENTATION:\nNerea Eizagirre\, a Center for Basque Studies’ Ph.D. student\, will be presenting this film via Zoom. Her dissertation is on the writings of Sarrionandia\, and she is currently in the Basque Country doing field work for her dissertation.  She has interviewed Joseba Sarrionandia several times along with members of his family and\, along with Dr. Mari Jose Olaziregi\, she is organizing a conference on Sarrionandia´s literature that will be held in July in Bilbao. \n\n\n\nClick here to learn more about the film

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | Chillida\, Esku Huts
DESCRIPTION:TWO IMPORTANT NOTES:\n\nThe film will be presented by Dr. Larraitz Ariznabarreta\, of the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies\, who will introduce the film and lead a discussion and Q&A after the screening.\nThe BEO will be following CDC guidelines. Please be prepared to wear masks during the show.\n\nSYNOPSIS:\nAt the age of 19\, Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) was a highly gifted athlete well on his way to becoming a football legend. However\, a brutal injury during a game put an end to his professional sports career. Nobody except Pilar Belzunce\, his life-long partner\, suspected that the young goalkeeper from Hernani was about to rewrite his future and die decades later as one of the 20th century’s best sculptors. Chillida: Esku Huts is not a conventional biography\, but a poetic\, intimate look at an artist second to none. A person who remains alive through his work\, his eight children and some of his closest collaborators. \n2016\, directed by Juan Barrero\, color\, in Euskara & Castilian with English subtitles\, 74 minutes

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | Agur Etxebeste!
DESCRIPTION:IMPORTANT NOTE:\nThe BEO will be following CDC guidelines. Please be prepared to wear masks during the show. \nSYNOPSIS:\nThe long-anticipated sequel to the 2005 Basque hit comedy Aupa Etxebeste! sees beret-maker Patrizio Etxebeste discover that life as town mayor isn’t as easy as he thought. Feigning poor health so he can resign before being disgraced in a corruption scandal\, Patrizio passes the job on to his wife María Luisa\, whom he assumes will follow his orders. Chaos ensues when this does not turn out to be the case\, as María Luisa has ideas of her own. Seeing an opportunity to make real change\, his wife seizes the chance of a lifetime\, but will their marriage survive? \nReuniting the electric combination of Ramón Agirre (Operation Goldenshell SFF18) and Elena Irureta as they return to their roles of Mr. and Mrs. Etxebeste\, this sharp social satire about corruption and power in local politics world premiered to critical acclaim at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Lampooning politics and marriage in a classic battle-of-the-sexes comedy\, Bye Bye Mr. Etxebeste! is as topical as it is hilarious.

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | THE SEVEN IN ONE WAY
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS:\nIn the Seven in One Way\, Denise Orpustan-Love\, a first generation Basque American and her family return to the small rural village of Ossès in the Basque Country in the summer of 2017 to visit her family and continue the life dream of restoring her late father’s 18th century mill house. Based on her book\, The Mill House Speaks:  Seven Pathways to the Ancestral Basque Homeland\, Denise narrates her teachings of the seven pathways -perennial wisdoms and ancient traditions of Basque life and mysticism. As her late mentor Angeles Arrien writes in the foreword\, the seven pathways “although rooted in Basque mysticism\, reflect the universal mysticism of all people.  These pathways decode the common mystical experiences of ancient cultures into an understandable\, concrete and practical map for navigating the complexities of today’s modern world”.

SUMMARY:Basque Film Series | Black is Beltza
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS:\nOctober 1965. The giant figures of San Fermín are invited to parade on New York’s Fifth Avenue\, but not all of them can participate: for racial reasons\, North American leaders have forbidden the black giants to participate in the event. Taking their inspiration from true events\, Muguruza\, Cano and Alderete tell the story of Manex Unanue\, a fictional character given the task of carrying one of those black giants. Bemoaning the fact that his companions have accepted the decision imposed on them\, Manex decides not to return home. Seen through the young boy’s eyes\, we discover the events that revolutionized the society of the mid-’60s: demonstrations after the death of Malcolm X\, the bizarre atmosphere of Warhol’s workshop\, the relationship woven between the Black Panthers and the Cuban secret service and the early days of the hippy movement\, enveloped in the psychedelic atmosphere of the first music macro festivals.
