Did you know bertsolaritza, the art of improvisation through song, can be learned? It sure can. Right here in the United States!

We had some burning questions about Arnas Berri Bertso Eskola, the bertso school launched in September 2022, and here’s what we learned:

Where can I learn bertso?
Through classes at Arnas Berri Bertso Eskola. 

Does it matter where you live?
Absolutely not. Classes are currently being held online.

Do I need to know Basque?
Well, sure. But if that answer gives you pause, don’t let yourself get in your own way. The teachers are flexible and eager to meet anyone with interest. 

What else do I need?
An imagination, a sense of humor, and a good memory. 

I love the idea, but I don’t understand bertsos when I attend.
Well, what’s pretty great is that increasingly there are translations into English happening in real-time (during live performances) and post-performance for recorded events. CLICK HERE to see what we mean. This was at the NABO convention in Los Banos, CA… which was also NABO’s 50th anniversary.

I’m not sure I’m confident enough to learn how to improvise, but I’m interested in the art form. Is there still room for me?
