Xabier Irujo’s Introduction to Basque Cultural Day, 2021

Authors of The Tree of Gernika, Irujo and Romtvedt offer us a peek into the life of Bertsolari Joxe Mari Iparragirre, author of the unofficial Basque anthem Gernikako Arbola. For the first time, his poetry has been translated into English, offering us a glimpse of Euskal Herria in the mid-1800s through the eyes of a man who lived much of his life in exile.

Irujo is the Director of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has authored more than fifteen books and a number of articles in specialized journals and has received awards and honors at national and international level.

With David Romtvedt, Irujo will discuss Iparragirre and his life as seen through the eyes of his own work.
